Interested in joining VFA’s Blue Crew?

Umpiring is not for everyone but it can be good money and is a great way to contribute to the game! You should be at least 12 years old.


Any umpire registered and certified with Softball BC can umpire with VFA. VFA tries to provide at least plate umpires for games from U11 and up. Softball BC requires registered, certified umpires for games from U13 and up. VFA encourages interested players, parents, grandparents or other family members to certify.

Registration and Certification

Softball BC requires umpires to register and take a clinic or a refresher course each year. Details on how to register and certify at: link and link.


Most associations in the Lower Mainland schedule clinics beginning in February and March. Registration for all clinics must be done online. Upcoming clinics are listed here. Look for clinics in Districts 4-7 as being reasonably nearby – we are in District 5. VFA usually runs a Level 1, Level 2, and refresher clinic in late March or early April. However, this is not guaranteed. You may want to register for a clinic elsewhere in the Lower Mainland to make sure you can attend on a date that works for you.

  • Cost

    You must be a member of Softball BC ($10 lifetime membership). If you have been a player or coach, you are a member. You must register and pay the umpire registration fee. The 2026 fee for a returning Level 1 umpire was $105.


    VFA will reimburse umpires for their clinic and registration fees after five games umpired. You must submit your receipt in order to be reimbursed.

  • Payment

    VFA pays Softball BC certified umpires anywhere from $20-$45 per game depending on their umpiring level and the level of the game they umpire. The VFA also raises the fees paid to their umpires by $5.00 per game after each five games umpired for the VFA up to maximum of $15.00 extra per game after 15 games.

  • Equipment

    We have umpire equipment (catcher pads and mask) available for umpires who do not have their own. Shin, chest and face protectors are available for a plate umpire in every VFA field box. If this equipment is missing from the box or unserviceable, please advise info@vancouverfastpitch.com.


    All umpires (except U11 and younger parents umpiring their own child’s game) are required to wear a blue Softball Canada shirt over their umpire gear.
